Mustafa Sarıgül, a former official from the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), is set to launch a new political party, Hürriyet newspaper reported on Saturday.

The former mayor of Istanbul’s Şişli district, who resigned from the CHP in January 2019, is expected to announce his new political movement during an upcoming visit to the southeastern city of Şırnak, the daily said.

Sarıgül selected seven-story building in Ankara’s Çankaya district to serve as his party headquarters, Hürriyet said.

Sarıgül’s prospective political movement will form the second breakaway from the CHP in less than a month. Earlier this week, former CHP presidential candidate Muharrem İnce announced plans for a new opposition party.

Sarıgül served as the CHP mayor of Şişli between 1999-2014 – with a brief intermission in 2005 – until he was ousted from the party.

The former CHP mayor ran in the 2014 Istanbul mayoral race and came in second place with 40 percent of the votes after Kadir Topbaş from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
