Five civilians were killed and 10 injured in an artillery attack by Damascus-backed forces on a hospital in Syria’s Idlib region, where Turkey controls parts of territory, the Turkish defence ministry said on Sunday.
One child was killed in the attack that constitutes “a crime against humanity,’’ministry said.
Turkey and Russia brokered a ceasefire agreement in March 2020 to end the fighting in the province between Turkish-backed forces and the Syrian military, which is backed by Russia.
The move followed the Syrian government’s offensive to recapture Idlib that was launched in April 2019, which displaced around 1 million people.
The Turkish military maintains 12 observation posts in Idlib, set up to prevent regime offensives, but for months the region has been under attack by forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.
