Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will meet in Moscow on Monday, marking the third meeting between the two leaders in 2019, state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday.

The Turkish president is slated to attend the High-Level Cooperation Council between the two countries, the opening ceremony of the Turkey-Russia cross-cultural year, in addition to the gala of the opera Troy in Bolshoi Theatre, the agency said.

The visit follows that of Jan. 23 and Feb. 14 meeting, during which, the two leaders have exchanged views on regional and international issues, and met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi to discuss Syria, respectively.

Erdoğan’s visit arrives amid soaring tensions with the United States of Turkey’s planned purchase of the Russian the S-400 defence system.

Turkey signed a deal with Russia on Dec. 29, 2017 for the $2.5-million purchase of two S-400 air defence systems with four batteries.

The United States has repeatedly stressed Turkey must scrap the deal, stating that Ankara’s use of the S-400 system alongside the F-35 fighter jets programme would compromise the security of the F-35 aircraft.

Washington halted delivery of equipment related to F-35 fighter jets to Ankara on Tuesday amid a years-long standoff with Turkey over its plans to buy the Russian system.
