Turkey shuts down historic İstanbul bazaar amid coronavirus outbreak

İstanbul’s historic Grand Bazaar has been closed as part of efforts to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, the T24 news website reported on Monday.

No statement has yet been released by the bazaar’s management.

The first novel coronavirus case was confirmed in Turkey on March 11. As of Sunday, 30 people had died from COVID-19 while there are a total of 1, 236 confirmed cases in the country, according to Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.

First seen in the Chinese city of Wuhan, COVID-19 has spread rapidly around the world, infecting nearly 370,000 people worldwide and killing more than 15,000.
