In Afghanistan, 8.7 million people are approaching hunger. This is reported by The New York Times with reference to the UN analysis.

After nearly four months of rule of Taliban that seized power in the country, Afghanistan is faced with numerous humanitarian crises, including severe food shortages. Already this winter, the food crisis could kill a million Afghan children.

According to preliminary estimates, 22.8 million people – more than half of the country’s population – will face a potentially life-threatening lack of food.

As the newspaper notes, the crisis was partly triggered by the economic collapse following the Taliban seizure of power, as US sanctions against a group of militants isolated the country and made it difficult to deliver aid to international organizations.

On December 9 it was reported that the Covid-19 pandemic led to the impoverishment of 100 million children.
