President Petro Poroshenko is convinced that Ukraine will become an energy independent state and supply electricity to the most powerful market in the world, the European Union market. The Head of State told this during the participation in the launch of the first wind turbines of the Prymorsk wind farm during the working visit to Zaporizhia region.

“There are such events as today. We are opening a new wind farm, on new renewable energy sources and we do not need gas. And this is forever,” the Head of State emphasized.

At the same time, the President noted that the issue of energy supply should be solved: “Given the nuclear power, given the industrial potential, given the capacities of renewable energy, we do not need so much electricity”.

The President notes that Ukraine is still a member of the energy association, which has been based since the time of the former Soviet Union. “We have a single energy system with Russia. And that is not right. We have to lay the power transmission lines to Europe. As it is the most powerful market,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.

“Electricity produced here and now will be sold to Europe. This is called energy visa-free regime,” the Head of State said.

“Energy visa-free regime and electricity supply to the most powerful world market mean new foreign currency earnings, strengthening of the national currency and energy independence. So, we must strive for energy independence. This is our own way. And on this way, we have to switch to this power system,” the President stressed.

He reminded that nearly half of Ukrainian coal was mined on the territory occupied by Russia. “Almost 100% of anthracite was mined in Donbas, which is now occupied. And the occupation was aimed to stop the Ukrainian electricity industry, strangle the Ukrainian economy, stop the Ukrainian plants and factories,” Petro Poroshenko noted.

At the same time, the President noted that in 2017, Ukraine had consumed only 14 billion cubic meters of gas, and in 2018 – 10.5 billion cubic meters. “And how much will it be in two years? If everything goes well, if we do not make a mistake, if we do not stop, if we continue our effective progress, it will be zero. Ukraine will become fully energy independent,” Petro Poroshenko said.
