Two members of the opposing Felicity Party (SP) were shot to death by a cousin of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP)’s mayoral candidate, SP leader Temel Karamollaoglu announced on Sunday.

“The incident was not a result of any [personal] hostility. It happened after they [AK Party members] attempted to carry out open voting and two people [a polling clerk and an observer] from SP objected to that,” Karamollaoglu tweeted on Sunday.

The incident took place around 10:30 am in a school in Puturge district of Malatya, while people were casting their votes to elect metropolitan municipality mayor, district mayor, municipal council members and headmen as part of Turkey’s local elections on Sunday.

Hasan Aktas and Ilyas Aktas were shot to death after an argument that broke out between two opposing groups turned into a conflict.

Security officers responded to the incident and a person was detained by the police for allegedly killing Hasan Aktas and Ilyas Aktas, according to Turkish media reports.

Security forces took measures around the area to eliminate the possibility of a similar incident, while bodies of Hasan Aktas and Ilyas Aktas were taken to the morgue.
