49 women murdered in August in Turkey
More than half the victims, 26 of them, were killed while they were at home.
Forty-nine women were murdered across Turkey in August, according to a monthly report by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform.
Of the 49 victims, 14 were killed by their spouses, eight by their relatives, seven by men who they were dating, three by men who they used to date, two by their fathers, two by ex-husbands, two by their brothers, two by their sons and one by a stepson. The murderer has not been identified in the case of eight others.
Three of the murders were perpetrated for economic reasons and 10 women were murdered because of decisions they made regarding their personal lives such as demanding a divorce or breakup or rejecting an advance. Seven other cases were registered as suspicious deaths, while 29 were killed for unknown reasons.
Firearms were the most frequently used weapons in the murder of women, with 25 murders being perpetrated using guns. Others were stabbed, strangled, poisoned or beaten to death.
