The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Kyiv rose by 29 in the past day, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko has reported.

Dear friends!
The number of new COVID-19 cases in Kyiv rose by 29 over
the past 24 hours. Overnight 44 people recovered and three
died. Here is a bit of positive news: this is the first time in Kyiv
since the beginning of the outbreak when the number of
recoveries exceeded new coronavirus cases.
Today the total number of infections stands at 2739, with 442
recoveries and 64 deaths.
12 new cases are among femаlеs, bеtwееn 34-67 yeas old, 14
among males (35-99 years old) and three among children.
There are also four medical professionals who got infected
with the virus. Ten patients are admitted to city hospitals.
Altogether 154 Kyivans have been hospitalised, including
three children. 46 patients are in the ICU and one of them is
on a ventilator. 91 more including five children are waiting for
the screening results.
People with various pneumonia diagnoses are also being
tested for the coronavirus. 59 more pneumonia patients have
been admitted to hospitals overnight, reaching 322 in total.
My special thank you goes to those Kyivans who respect
health precautions, wear facial masks in public places and
keep a distance, especially in public transport. Such basic,
simple rules are very important now.
As you know, the ground public transport and Metro have
resumed the full operation. Almost 835,000 people have
ridden the ground public transport since May 23. On May 25,
the first day of its full operation Metro delivered 310,000 rides,
yesterday – 463,000 rides. To prevent crowds Metro limits the
number of passengers entering some stations in peak hours.
Before the coronavirus pandemic, the Kyiv metro carried an
average of 1,5 million passengers a day.
Unfortunately, many riders do not follow health precautions.
They do not keep the distance and wear no masks though they
are mandatory for wearing in public transport. Sadly, they are
putting at risk not only their own health but all people around.
Please remember that public transportation ridership accounts
for 34% of coronavirus infections and avoid travelling unless
you have a really valid reason.
Today the Kyiv Emergency Commission allowed to reopen the
shopping malls as of May 30. Entertainment zones and play
areas inside the malls will remain closed so far.
Hotels will also resume operations on May 30. They must
observe the strict health guidelines, including wearing face
masks in public areas, temperature screening of the staff and
guests, a limited number of guests at the lobby (a person per
10 sq. m.). Hotel restaurants will reopen for takeaway and
room service only.
I am often asked about Kyiv reopening for tourists. You see,
tourism is dереndеnt on the full operation of railway and air
transport. Many European countries gradually loosen the
restrictions аrоund tourism and Kyiv will do the same.
The pandemic greatly impacted our travel industry,
international arrivals decreased by 90% compared to the same
period in 2019. Travel agencies, restaurants, hotels in Kyiv have
lost $1 billion in revenue due to the pandemic which means
also a significant loss in revenue for the city.

Currently, we are looking to increase domestic travel. Once
countries lift the air travel ban, we hope international tourism
will again come to life.
Meanwhile, we are doing everything we can to make the city
more enjoyable for visitors. All popular tourist attractions are
already open: a beautiful pedestrian and cycle bridge,
Volodymyrska Hirka park, a new-look Artists Alley or renovated
stairs to Podil’s Gonchari-Kozhum’yaki ravine. This year we are
continuing with our plans to refurbish and add new tourist
locations to make amazing Kyiv even more beautiful.
Stay safe and healthy!
Yours,
Vitali Klitschko
