Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Saturday slammed the normalisation of ties between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, calling the newly signed landmark accord between the two countries a “political suicide” against the Palestinian cause.

The Abraham Accord aims to destroy a two-state solution in the Israel-Palestine conflict, AKP spokesman Ömer Çelik said on Twitter.

“The UAE, in signing this agreement, aims to create a ‘coalition’ and influence against the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions on Palestine,” Çelik said.

“This so-called normalisation step by the UAE cannot be considered separate from the Libya and Yemen policies that disrupt the relations among states in the Middle East and sow the seeds of animosity and strife among peoples,” the AKP spokesman said.

On Thursday, Israel and the UAE announced they would establish ties – which includes exchanging diplomats and embassies – in a deal brokered by the United States.

Turkey has strongly condemned the UAE, with the Turkish Foreign Ministry calling the deal a betrayal.

“History and the conscience of the region’s peoples will not forget and never forgive this hypocritical behaviour of the UAE, betraying the Palestinian cause for the sake of its narrow interests,” the ministry said.

Turkey was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Israel, back in 1949, although the relationship has been fraught with tension in recent years.
