Police in Turkey’s central province of Eskişehir have uncovered an illegal gambling den run under the auspices of a local chess club, secularist daily Cumhuriyet reported.

The police raided the Chess and Checkers Lovers’ Association building this week, detaining the association’s head and 85 other people and confiscating a bingo machine and other gambling equipment, the report said.

The 85 people detained were fined 320 liras ($58) each and released.

But a more significant fine may be on the cards for the association director, whose alleged gambit of running the gambling den under the cover of the chess club is likely to be met with charges related to facilitating illegal gambling.
