Turkey’s Communist Party nominates headscarved woman as mayoral candidate

The Turkish Communist Party (TKP) has nominated a headscarved woman for mayoral elections due to be held on March 31.

Fatma Akın, a textile worker, will run for office in İstanbul Güngören’s district under the slogan ‘”We are not on the same ship,” as a response to the Islamist-oriented Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The AKP has been governing Turkey since 2002 and has control over a majority of municipalities in the country.
