Turkey’s top religious body says Bugs Bunny, Popeye encourage aggression in children

Turkey’s state body regulating the role of Islam in the country has said certain cartoons, including Bugs Bunny, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Popeye, encourage aggressive behaviour in children.
The Religious Affairs Directorate in the latest issue of its monthly Aile (Family) Magazine called out the decades-old famous cartoons, among others, accusing them of inculcating the idea that “all is fair in the pursuit of victory over evil.’’
In such cartoons, “the main characters are in a situation where they are rewarded following acts of violence, which leads to children viewing violence as acceptable,’’ the directorate’s magazine said.

Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate, which has become the most-funded public institution in the country under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has come under fire for issuing controversial fatwas, non-binding but religiously authoritative legal opinions.
