Ukraine is gaining strength in its energy independence – President in Khmelnytskyi region

During his participation in the Khmelnytskyi Regional Development Council, President Petro Poroshenko noted the achievements of Ukraine on the path to its energy independence.

“The day before yesterday, we have discussed energy independence at the meeting on the development of nuclear energy in Netishyn, particularly the energy bridge to the European Union. The bridge is a dream that starts to be realized. We are leaving the Soviet power system. Ukraine is getting stronger in its energy independence. And we will continue this strategy,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State stressed that the strategy of increasing the share of nuclear power plants in the production of electricity to 70% was now being implemented. He also noted that due to his meeting with US President Donald Trump, an agreement had been reached and close cooperation with the US company Westinghouse had been established. Respectively, 6 of 13 power units of our NPPs are using fuel from outside Russia.

“This is half the nuclear generation. And the diversification process is continued. It can already be argued that we managed to overcome the onerous dependence of Ukrainian nuclear power generation on Russian nuclear fuel. A few years ago the dependence was one hundred percent,” Petro Poroshenko said. The President stressed the importance of another direction that contributes to our energy independence – energy saving.

“Another common priority of the state and communities is energy saving and energy independence. There are 19 solar power stations in the territory of Khmelnytskyi region with a total capacity of 55 MW,” the Head of State said, adding that in Kamianets-Podilskyi, the World Bank had opened the first in Ukraine, the third in Europe and the fifth in the world modern biothermal power plant with a capacity of 45 MW.

“And during 2019-2020 in Khmelnytskyi region, due to the investments in the amount of $ 350 million, it is planned to commission 36 solar power stations with a total capacity of more than 370 MW,” Petro Poroshenko concluded.
