A deputy police chief, who had been held in prison for over four years, was found dead in a quarantine cell in Turkey’s Gümüşhane E Type Closed Prison.

The photos taken after his death revealed the poor conditions of the prison facility.

According to the Bold Medya news portal, 44-year-old Mustafa Kabakçıoğlu’s body was found by prison guards in a plastic chair on August 29, after spending nine days in quarantine.

Kabakçıoğlu was reportedly expected to be released from jail in March 2021.

During his time in prison, the purged officer reportedly lost 40 kilos due to multiple health problems including diabetes.

The photos, released by the Bold Medya, shows Kabakçıoğlu’s lifeless body sitting in a plastic chair in the middle of a filthy quarantine cell.

The Justice and Development Party (AKP) government along with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan blames the Gülen group for a coup attempt that killed over 240 people and wounded more than a thousand others in Turkey on July 15, 2016.

Kabakçıoğlu was accused by a Turkish court over alleged membership in the group. After the failed coup, he was removed from his post on September 1, 2016, as part of the first decree issued by the AKP government, which was followed by many more during the two-year-long state of emergency.
