Politicians took away the prospect of the state by their internal discord – President urged not to repeat century-old mistakes

The President also drew example of the provision of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Poland in 1924. “Ukraine didn’t get it because there was already no Ukraine in 1924,” he stressed.

During the Regional Development Council of Dnipropetrovsk Region, President Poroshenko emphasized the importance of preserving the unity of all Ukrainians and studying history lessons when our country lost its independence and statehood at the time of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

The Head of State noted that discussions at the Regional Development Councils provided an opportunity to exchange experience and implement the best practices of the united territorial communities. “This is exactly what the Regional Development Council is doing. In order to exchange experience, coordinate actions and provide a decisive offensive by joint efforts. We protect the interests of the community, we protect the interests of the state and we protect the interests of the person,” Petro Poroshenko said.

“And, most importantly, this is not material. We will find the money, we have shown that convincingly over the past five years. The main thing is the united will to change and reform as part of the united team,” the President emphasized and drew an example of the Ukrainian People’s Republic when Ukrainians lacked unity.

“One hundred years ago, in 1917-21, the Lord also gave us a chance to build a state. And a hundred years have been wasted. Who was to blame for that? Aggressor from Moscow? No. They have always loomed over us. We should have defended the state. People? No. People demonstrated unity. Maybe writers, artists, kobzars, bandura players. Maybe they didn’t play enough to raise national spirit? No. So who was to blame? State-mongers whose internal discord has taken away the prospect of the state. Everything is simple,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President also drew example of the provision of autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Poland in 1924. “Ukraine didn’t get it because there was already no Ukraine in 1924,” he stressed.

“The price was paid not by the state-mongers – they fled to Europe. The price was paid by my people in the form of the Holodomor with 8 million victims, Red Terror of 1937-41, deportation of 1944, famine of 1947-49, men of the sixties who were put in jail only for the trident or the blue-yellow flag. Our nation has been deprived of statehood for 100 years. That is why unity is above all today,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

“We are able to preserve the state. We must use this chance to prove that these victims were not for nothing and to carry out reforms,” the President noted and stressed that it was important to clearly state what would be done in the near future.
