Turkish university student sentenced to 7.5 years over Gülen links

Turkey accuses the Gülen movement of orchestrating a 2016 coup attempt, although it strongly denies any involvement.

Muhammed Harun Bulut, a Turkish university student in Adana province, on Thursday was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison for membership in the faith-based Gülen movement, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

The court also ruled for a continuation of the defendant’s imprisonment while the verdict is appealed.

According to Turkish media reports, nearly 70,000 university students are in prison, many of whom are accused of being linked to terrorist groups.

Since the abortive putsch, over 500,000 people have been the subjects of prosecution over Gülen links, and currently some 30,000 people are in jail on the same charge.

Meanwhile, the Muş Public Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday ordered the detention of 33 people, including public servants who have been fired from their jobs, over alleged Gülen ties.
