A Turkish court on Friday handed down a five-year, 10-month sentence to Pınar Karagöz, a popular social media influencer known as “Pucca,” on charges of promoting drug use on her social media accounts, the Diken news website reported.

Karagöz was briefly detained in October along with other social media figures in a drug enforcement police operation.

In June 2018 her father’s house was raided by Turkish police over one of her social media posts as part of a counterterrorism operation, but she was not detained at the time.

In the post she wrote, “I am a servant of Batı,” referring to her son Batı (which means “West” in English); however the official complaint to the police said that particular tweet was “evidence” of her working as a spy for Western countries.

Her lawyer will appeal the verdict.
