Erdoğan wielding legislative authority to outpower Turkish parliament: deputy
Turkey adopted the executive presidential system in a narrowly backed referendum in 2017, and Erdoğan became the first president to exercise the new powers after his June 2018 reelection.
A new report drafted by an opposition deputy has revealed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has exercised his legislative authority to outpower the Turkish parliament during the first two years of the country’s new executive presidency, the Artı Gerçek news website reported on Thursday.
İbrahim Kaboğlu, also a prominent law professor who was purged by the government following a 2016 failed coup, reported that in the first 19 months of his presidency, Erdoğan has implemented 2,064 pieces of legislation in 55 decrees, whereas the parliament with its 600 deputies only passed 1,046 bills.
