“Non-prolongation of the treaty with Russia should be considered not as an episode, but as part of our strategy for the final break with the colonial past and reorientation towards Europe,” the President emphasized.

“Other components of this strategy are: visa-free regime, Association Agreement with the EU, Tomos on the creation of the Autocephalous Ukrainian church, withdrawal from the CIS, consolidation of the course of accession to NATO and the European Union, creation of a powerful, patriotic and professional Ukrainian army, support of the Ukrainian language, own history and strengthening of our national identity,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The Head of State also demands the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to complete the inventory of the legal framework with Russia. “We will continue to draw conclusions about the usefulness of certain agreements,” Poroshenko said.

The Head of State also demands the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to take urgent and effective steps in order to create an interagency coordination body to form a consolidated claim of Ukraine against Russia for the losses caused by the sustained armed aggression. “I expect that the special status and special functions will allow such an institution to carry out its tasks of protecting Ukraine’s national interests effectively,” the President summed up.

Petro Poroshenko said that this agreement had not been terminated earlier in order to use its provisions as the basis for our numerous claims to international courts and other international instances against Russia – as breacher of this treaty and the provisions of international law. In particular, he cited certain provisions of this treaty, which envisage that the parties “shall build relations with each other on the basis of the principles of mutual respect …, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders …, non-use of force, non-interference in internal affairs …, faithful fulfillment of international commitments …, norms of international law … “.

The Head of State stressed that in the beginning of 2019 another 10-year term would come to an end and Ukraine would have to formally decide whether to prolong it or terminate it. According to him, “the choice is obvious – termination”.

Petro Poroshenko also added that Ukraine had used all the possibilities of that document in its national interests.
