An-12 crashes killing five people onboard
The aircraft was eventually found 1.5km from the runway.
A Ukrainian-registered Antonov An-12 cargo aircraft has crashed as it approached Lviv airport resulting in the death of five people on board.
The aircraft (UR-CAH) had been carrying cargo between Vigo and Istanbul and was set to make a technical stop in Lviv when the incident occurred.
According to the State Emergency Service of (SES) Ukraine, there were seven crew members onboard as well as one person accompanying the cargo.
The three survivors that were pulled from the wreckage are reported to be in a serious condition.
The SES said that the aircraft was an automotive shipment. It said that the aircraft had disappeared from radar screens at 07:10, then at 07:29 crew members had reported that the aircraft had made an emergency landing.
The aircraft was eventually found 1.5km from the runway.
Air Cargo News sister title reports that the aircraft was operated by Ukraine Air Alliance, and that it was delivered originally to the Soviet air force in 1968 and that UAA said that it acquired the aircraft in February 2012.
Investigators have opened an inquiry into the accident, says the infrastructure ministry.
