President: There are still maniacs ready to put the world on the verge of the third world war, that is why we must be vigilant and responsible

According to President Petro Poroshenko, years passed and after the terrible Second World War new generations of freedom-loving Ukrainians were born, who were lucky enough to live and work already in an independent Ukrainian state.

“And, just as in the 1930s and 1940s, when our ancestors defended the country from the Nazi invasion, we protect our glorious Ukraine from the Moscow horde today. We bow our heads to the memory of heroes who performed their military duty, remained loyal to the oath until the last breath and gave their lives to Ukraine,”he said.

The Head of State remarked that the memory of the enormous human sacrifices of the Second World War, thousands of ruined cities and burnt villages once again warns the world of the danger of repeating such a disaster.

“Unfortunately, there are still maniacs ready to put the world on the verge of the third world war. They are here, not far, that is why we must be vigilant and responsible,” the President said.

The Head of State reminded that Stalin’s Soviet Union during the first two years of the Second World War was an ally of Hitler’s Germany. “The war, which the USSR unleashed against Finland, the annexation and occupation of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia were the same examples of aggressive actions that the Nazi regime did in Europe before sending weapons against the former eastern ally. The nations of the Soviet Union, including us, Ukrainians, paid a very high and terrible price  for this,” he said.

“Today, Putin’s Russia has again embarked on gross negligence of the norms of international law, destruction of the world order, non-recognition of borders, denial of the existence of the whole nations and aggression against the neighboring states. I am convinced that by joint efforts we will win, overcome the aggressor and secure peace,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

The President congratulated Ukrainians on the Day of Victory over Nazism in the Second World War.

President: Four years ago, Ukraine almost lost all the Donbas, but due to a successful military operation, we liberated two thirds of our land

President Petro Poroshenko stressed that the Ukrainian army had become an army of people without exaggeration. Every Ukrainian participated in its development and creation. It was stated by the President in the ceremony of taking military oath by the new replenishment of the 101st separate guard brigade of the AFU General Staff.

According to the Head of State, young soldiers enter the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which, according to the authoritative international think tank, are among the ten strongest European armies. “We are the eighth in the corresponding ranking on the continent. And our army is the twenty-ninth in the world. But our Armed Forces still must keep growing and developing, since we are opposed and threatened by the army of the aggressor-country. And only the army of our partner and ally, the United States of America, is greater and stronger,” the President underlined.

According to him, the Armed Forces of Ukraine enjoy the highest level of trust among all state institutions of Ukraine. “They are our national pride. They are the fruit of the joint work of society and the state, volunteers, soldiers, officers and generals of the Armed Forces. This is without exaggeration the People’s Army,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President said: “In the spring of 2014, when Russia attacked Ukraine, most of you were almost teenagers. Now, only from the stories of veterans, from the lessons of national patriotic training and textbooks, will you learn about the critical state of our army when it had to encounter the aggressor. Before that, it was irresponsibly abandoned, destroyed and sold by the previous generation of politicians. Some presidents, prime ministers, defense ministers and people’s deputies. It is awful even to recall the state, from which we had to restore the army together. Every Ukrainian participated in this”.

According to Petro Poroshenko, taxes of Ukrainians, war tax and other resources of the state were allocated to the AFU reform. “The result is more than obvious. The army is dressed today, the army is fed, the army is trained, the army is motivated. The army is armed, still not perfect, but better than ever in our history,” the President noted.

“Its strength and glory are measured, however, not by ratings, but by strength and reliability of our defense. Looks like it’s almost forgotten that in the spring of 2014, Ukraine lost almost the entire Donbas. On May 25, almost four years ago, when I was elected President, the whole Donbas was under the control of Russian-terrorist troops and their mercenaries, the fifth column inside the country. But I emphasize that in the summer of that year there was a successful military operation, as a result of which the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Security Service units, the newly formed National Guards, volunteer battalions and other units of the security forces liberated almost two thirds of Donetsk and Luhansk region from the militants,” the President said.

The Head of State stressed: “When our soldiers approached the areas of large cities with an extremely high population density, the final of the operation was greatly complicated. Ukraine and the military leadership would never allow themselves to liberate Donetsk as Russians liberated Grozny – just wipe it off from the face of the earth”.

The President also reminded that Russia had organized the invasion of Ukraine by regular units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation. “By concentrating all the forces and resources, we have resisted and firmly hold the defense against one of the largest armies in the world,” he added.

President: Without millions of Ukrainian soldiers there would be no common victory in the Second World War and salvation from Nazism

President Petro Poroshenko stressed that Ukrainians had made a significant contribution to the victory over Nazism in the Second World War.

Without millions of Ukrainian soldiers in World War II the world war wouldn’t have finished. It would have lasted much longer,” the Head of State noted.

The President stressed that Ukrainians with weapons in their hands had defended their land from hostile attacks throughout the history. “The connection between generations of defenders of Ukraine is inextricably linked. These days, we traditionally honor memory of the defenders of Ukraine who fought and won on different lands and continents during the Second World War,” the Head of State emphasized.

“Paying tribute to the tremendous role of the troops of all the states of the anti-Hitler coalition in the defeat of the Third Reich, we are, of course, proud of the contribution of Ukrainians to the achievement of a common victory and salvation of the world from Nazi enslavement. Bled white by the pre-war collectivization, the Holodomor, the Great Terror of the 1930s, our people lost every fifth daughter and son in the flame of the worldwide human disaster,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President stressed that Ukraine, as a result of its geostrategic situation, had become one of the main bridgeheads of the World War – during thirty-five months, active military operations of regular troops were conducted on its territory.

The President stressed that one should know and remember the feats of Ukrainians on all fronts of the Second World War: “On the banks of the Dnieper and the Donets, the Volga and the Ladoga, the Vistula and the Danube. In the sky of Britain, the deserts of North Africa, on the coast of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific Ocean. In the Red Army, in the military structure of the countries of the Anti-Hitler coalition: the United States, Canada and many others. And of course – in the ranks of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army”.

“Today, we proudly honor our most respected citizens – people of the older generation: soldiers of all the armies who defeated Nazis, rear workers, war children and martyrs of the Nazi concentration camps,” the President said.

President: Russia celebrates the Victory Day in a militaristic passion, having bristled up against the whole world, and we, together with the whole Europe, commemorate the deceased

President Petro Poroshenko stresses that today “the reverse price of victory”, which is caused not only by the atrocities of the Nazis, was defined.

He cited data that was promulgated by a special commission under the Russian President headed by former veteran, academician and member of the Politburo Alexander Yakovlev. “Nearly a million Soviet soldiers were shot by their own people. More precisely – 954 thousand. And mostly it goes about innocent people,” the Head of State said.

“No, this President, who yesterday de-facto started his fifth presidential term, didn’t establish it. This commission was working in the 90s, when Russia was still interested in its genuine, not propaganda history. When else was it allowed there to look for complicated answers to complicated questions?” Petro Poroshenko said and urged to think “how differently we see and celebrate the same date”.

“Stalin won this war for them. For us, people won this war. For them, as all post-war decades have proved, the victory over Hitler was needed to conquer other countries. And the “liberators” either forgot to leave the liberated territories, or from time to time rushed there on the tanks, as in Hungary in 1956, as in Czechoslovakia in 1968. And we needed only our own freedom, our own independence, which we eventually got 46 years after the victory,” he said. The President added that “they celebrate in a militaristic passion, having bristled up against the whole world, and we, together with the whole Europe, commemorate the deceased”.

“We say: “Never again”. They say: “We can repeat”. And this is not an empty rhetoric, but a real clutter of weapons, including the intimidation of western countries by a nuclear strike,” the President noted.

He highlighted the fact that “Russia considers even the “Immortal Regiment” as a genuine unit of the modern armed forces of Russia”.

“Its mission is to participate in a hybrid war, which Moscow conducts in a variety of ways, and not only against Ukraine, but also against the European Union, the United States and other countries. Actually, against the whole world,” he added.

The President stresses that he understands the feelings of Ukrainians who want to honor the memory of their grandfathers and great-grandfathers who gained the victory in the Second World War.

“But I must once again warn fellow Ukrainians, those who have not fully understood all the nuances of Moscow’s sly policy. The part that still believes Russian propaganda and its camp followers from the fifth column of various political forces within the country, the parliament and beyond. They do not think about you and your pride, your deep and grateful son’s love for your heroic ancestors, but about their geopolitical imperial aggressive goals. It must be admitted that the Kremlin psychologists are able to play with the natural emotions of people. I beg you, be careful. And please do not let yourself be used”.

Petro Poroshenko stressed: “We, Ukrainians, quietly, peacefully and Christianly remember our ancestors, participants, veterans of the war”.

At the end of the speech, the President announced the symbolic “First Minute of Peace”. After that, a memorial fire of memory was lit.

The Head of State also spoke with the participants of the memorial event.

President: Ukrainian nation must be proud of the contribution to the common victory of the United Nations over the Hitlerism

“Several generations of Ukrainians grew up on a carefully retouched version of the Great Patriotic War,” President Petro Poroshenko said during the “First Minute of Peace” Action, which took place in the National Museum of Ukrainian History in the Second World War.

“For twenty-seven years of independent existence, we have not forgotten anyone and have not rejected anything that is true. Instead, we discovered many new pages of this tragic story that were hidden very carefully and thoroughly from us. They have been researched in recent years in the framework of the modern policy of historical memory,” Petro Poroshenko noted.

The President stressed that by June 22, 1941, nearly a hundred thousand Ukrainians had already been killed on various fronts of the Second World War. “Therefore, we have expanded the horizon of memory and the war for us began on September 1, 1939 – when two hundred thousand Ukrainians from Galicia and Volyn started defending the Polish state from the Nazis,” Petro Poroshenko said.

The President noted that it had already been proved “by irrefutable facts that Stalin’s Russia and Nazi Germany have been allies for almost two years (1939-1941)”.

“Today, we are well aware of their joint parade on the territory of the divided Rzeczpospolita, and of the German-Soviet Boundary and Friendship Treaty of 28 September 1939 concluded a few days before the beginning of World War II. As if it was a blessing from Stalin to Hitler,” the President said.

The Head of State said: “The two totalitarian empires, brown and red, sought world domination. One was under swastika. The other was obsessed with the communist ideology, under the Kremlin’s star and the false cover of class internationalism. And Ukraine was between a rock and a hard place”.

The President stressed that the picture of the participation of Ukrainians in the Second World War had become much more complete now.

“It is obvious that from the summer of 1941 to the spring of 1945 the main land theater of military operations was the Soviet-German one. And the greatest tragedy in the history of humanity unfolded to a large extent on our land, on the territory of Ukraine. Our sacrifices, our losses were enormous. And we do not have the right to forget about them, we must constantly remember them. Our Ukrainian nation should be proud of the contribution to the joint victory of the United Nations over the Hitlerism. And nobody should be allowed to privatize the victory,” Petro Poroshenko said.

President: We are justly proud of the result in the development of the Ukrainian army

President Petro Poroshenko notes that “four years ago, Ukraine was ready to the war with Russia even to a lesser degree than the Soviet Union to the collision with Nazi Germany”.

“Last month it became known that the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to Global Firepower analytical center, entered the ten most powerful armies in Europe. And I want to congratulate all Ukrainian military, Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak, Chief of the General Staff of Viktor Muzhenko, all Ukrainian soldiers and all Ukrainian people. We gained the eighth place and the first among non-NATO countries,” the Head of State said and urged to recall what the Ukrainian army was four years ago.

“We, together, the entire Ukrainian people, are rightly proud of this result in the development of the army. This is due to our soldiers, officers, generals, volunteers, workers of the defense industry complex. Due to every Ukrainian, taxpayer. And I, as Supreme Commander-in-Chief, am also not ashamed of this work, because there is something to report to the public for these four years,” the President emphasized, but called for being realists.

“This European ranking does not include the Russian army. Instead, in the global ranking made by the same Global Firepower, the Russian army is the second most powerful in the world after the United States. For us, the armed forces of the Russian Federation are an army of the aggressor-country, which annexed Crimea, occupied part of the Donbas. And it is ready to a full-scale invasion at any moment,” he stressed.

“Therefore, we have a lot to do – it’s a huge work to strengthen the country’s defense capability,” the Supreme Commander-in-Chief emphasized.

Petro Poroshenko stresses that the price of victory is important for Ukraine: “And human lives – all together and any one separate – for the Ukrainian Homeland are of an incomparably higher value than for the “Soviet Homeland”.

“No war, unfortunately, can do without sacrifices and a decline in living standards. But for us both capitulation and victory at the cost of colossal and inadmissible victims are equally unacceptable. Perhaps a sensible, non-adventurous and responsible approach to the liberation of the occupied territories will require more time, but victory is inevitable. And we have already achieved a lot,” the President noted.

The Head of State reminded that in the spring of 2014, Russia planned to split Ukraine into several pieces. “We disrupted this insidious plan with the heroic will of the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian warriors. We caught hold of the ground, cemented into the map of Europe and the world. We took such strong roots that no force is able to unearth us from our legal and natural place. From the place we’ve been living in for thousands of years already,” he stressed.

According to him, in the summer of 2014, having carefully prepared the operation, immediately after the presidential elections, the Ukrainian troops launched an offensive and released almost two-thirds of the Donbas, which had been occupied almost entirely before. “ATO was already approaching the victorious end. And this was precisely the reason for the invasion of Russian regular troops,” the President stressed.

“Since then, our army has been strengthened significantly. And it reliably holds the defense against the largest army on the continent, the army of the Russian Federation as an aggressor-country,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

“We will definitely win this time as well. With different price, in a different way, by other means. Not only military, not only defensive, but also political-diplomatic ones,” the President said.

President: Just as in World War II, when Ukraine was attacked from the west, 4 years ago the war came to us from the east

President Petro Poroshenko notes that the Second World War started not out of a clear sky. “It did not become a surprise. Its reasons have been ripening for a very long time, its triggers have been caused persistently,” the Head of State stressed during the”First Minute of Peace” Action, which took place in the National Museum of Ukrainian History in the Second World War.

“I want to remind you that many politicians hid their heads in the sand at that time in a senseless hope that you can appease the aggressor,” Petro Poroshenko said.

He recalled that “eighty years ago, in the spring of 1938, Führer organized the Austrian Anschluss”.

“Wasn’t the Ukrainian Crimea annexed under such a scenario? Our Crimea four years ago?” the President noted. He also recalled that “a little bit later, Hitler, under the pretext of alleged protection of the rights of the German-speaking population, occupied the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia”.

“Doesn’t it looks like the Russian occupation of the Ukrainian Donbas? Just as in World War II, when Ukraine was attacked from the west, 4 years ago the war came to us from the east,” the Head of State said.

President: Today, Ukraine together with other democratic states and nations honors memory of all those killed during World War II

During the “First Minute of Peace” Action that took place in the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko noted that “today, Ukraine together with other democratic states and nations honors memory of all those killed during World War II”.

“Eternal memory of the enormous victims of the Second World War, of thousands of ruined cities and tens of thousands of burnt villages once again warns the world against the danger of repeating such a catastrophe,” the President said, adding that “every year, there are less and less real witnesses of that war and the youngest participants in hostilities are almost ninety years old”.

“Today, we proudly honor our most respected citizens – people of this older, legendary generation… The soldiers of all the armies who defeated the Nazis, members of the Ukrainian liberation movement, rear workers, war children and martyrs of the Nazi persecution, all who survived the infernal burden of war,” the President said and congratulated everyone on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation and the Victory Day over Nazism in World War II.

The Head of State wished “peace to all of us”. “It is precisely clear these days that for the country the wishes of peace are the most important – as well as the wishes of health for an individual,” Petro Poroshenko summed up.

Together with the Head of State, the Action was joined by the representatives of the National Council of Churches, families of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, modern heroes – Ukrainian military who defended Ukraine from the Russian aggression, government officials, representatives of the Presidential Administration and the public.

President: We want to build a new international security system that was ruined by the Russian aggressor

President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that Ukraine, along with international partners, wants to build a new system of international security, for which it is necessary to create a reliable defense of our sovereignty and territorial integrity, independence in a single Euro-Atlantic system of collective security.

“Only strong and capable army is the main factor of our security,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized opening the “Heroes” photo exhibition.

“Building the army is our duty to the coming generations of Ukrainians. This our way to honor the bright memory of the deceased in the Second World War and all the fighters for Ukrainian statehood,” the President said.

The Head of State also said: “Together with our partners, we are striving to build a new system of international security that was destroyed by the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation. To do this, we need to create a reliable defense of our sovereignty and territorial integrity, our independence in a single Euro-Atlantic system of collective security”.

The President congratulated the military cadets and lyceum students, all young patriots, who at this time have chosen the most honorable and sacred profession – protection of their native Ukraine, their land, their families from the attacks of enemies, who have chosen the way to protect peace.

“I congratulate all the Ukrainian defenders who protect peace of our state on the frontline today. Everyone who selflessly helps our warriors – our volunteers,” the President said.

Petro Poroshenko also thanked the heroes-warriors present at the exhibition and the veterans. “Let the Ukrainian invincible spirit inspire all of us for a devotional service to Ukraine, new accomplishments and our new common victories,” the President noted.

President: In January 2015, Russian regular troops carried out shelling of Mariupol

President Petro Poroshenko says that the Security Service of Ukraine proved that Russian regular soldiers from the regular missile division of the armed forces of the Russian Federation had taken part in shelling of Mariupol on January 2015. And the operation was directly headed by the chief of the missile troops and artillery of the South Military District from the territory of Russia.

“Yesterday, the Security Service of Ukraine informed that the investigators had proved that the shelling of Mariupol in January 2015 had been carried out by the Russian regular soldiers from the regular missile division of the armed forces of the Russian Federation. And the operation was directly headed by the chief of the missile troops and artillery of the South Military District from the territory of Russia,” the President noted.

“I want to emphasize that the results of the investigation of the Security Service matched those of the Bellingcat international group of investigation. The group published photos of the Russian military criminals who were killing the inhabitants of the Ukrainian Mariupol in cold blood,” the Head of State stressed.

The President reminded that he had immediately departed to Mariupol and met with local residents, with the affected families. “On that day, Russians killed 31 Ukrainians, 117 Ukrainians were wounded,” he said.

“This is how those savages defend Russians in Ukraine,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

President: Our military calendar should have nothing in common with the country-aggressor

President Petro Poroshenko emphasizes that the Ukrainian state goes back to the origins of its own history, and the policy of historical memory is becoming Ukrainian again.

“At the end of last month, at my command, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko approved the Program of measures for the restoration and implementation of national traditions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The army will be finally cleared of all the dangerous rudiments of the Soviet-Russian ideology, which negatively affect the morale of the Ukrainian army. They mislead us with false propaganda stamps called to keep us in mental orbit of Russia,” Petro Poroshenko said during the opening of the “Heroes” photo exhibition.

“Our military calendar should have nothing in common with the country-aggressor,” the Head of State stressed.

The President emphasized that Ukraine had made several efficient steps to strengthen our national identity over the past 4 years.

“We go back to the origins of our Ukrainian history. The policy of historical memory is becoming Ukrainian again,” he stressed.

Petro Poroshenko reminded that in 2014, we had put an end to “the ancient and strange tradition of celebrating the main military holiday in unison with the aggressor country”. “I abolished the Defender of the Homeland Day and introduced the Day of the Defender of Ukraine appointing it to October 14 – the Cossack feast of Pokrov,” the President said.

According to him, on November 21, 2017, the Day of the Ukrainian Paratroopers was marked for the first time. “Earlier, it was celebrated on August 2 and people did not think that it was just the date of the first jump of paratroopers in the Moscow Military District,” the President reminded.

The Head of State emphasized: “In late April, I introduced the new Day of the Ukrainian Border Guard. Exactly one hundred years ago, the Sloviansk group of the Separate Zaporizhzhia division of the UPR Army led by colonel Volodymyr Sikevych liberated a big part of the Donbas and reached the internationally recognized border of Ukraine. Now, April 30 is the Day of the Border Guard”.

President opening the “Heroes” exhibition: We should know and remember everyone who defended the homeland bravely

“It is very important to open little-known pages of history, enhance connection between the generations of our Ukrainian warriors. The participants of the Second World War, consisting of the Red Army, Army of the Anti-Hitler coalition, resistance movements in the occupied Nazi countries… Ukrainian Insurgent Army and defenders of Ukraine from the Armed Forces, National Guard and other formations,” President Petro Poroshenko said opening the “Heroes” photo exhibition”.

The Head of State thanked the authors of this project, historians of the leading scientific institutions of Ukraine.

“The exhibition, created by you, clearly demonstrates the global scale of Ukrainians’ participation in the Second World War. We see clear and important parallels between the tragic events of the 30s and 40s of the last century and the difficult challenges of our time,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

“We should know and remember everyone who defended the homeland bravely. Ukrainian youth should know about the feats of thousands of Ukrainians on all frontlines of World War II: sky of Britain, sands of North Africa, beaches of Normandy, islands of the Pacific Ocean. They are all our heroes,” he said.

“Throughout history, Ukrainians with weapons in their hands defended their native land from hostile attacks. The connection between all generations of defenders of Ukraine is inextricably linked,” the President noted.

The Head of State stressed that today, they defend Ukraine from the Russian aggression.

“These days we honor the memory of the defenders of Ukraine, who fought and won on different lands and continents at different times. During the Second World War – the bloodiest in the history of mankind,” he said.

Upon completion of the speech, the President and his wife Maryna Poroshenko watched the exposition of the “Heroes” photo exhibition and visited the “Ukrainian East” exhibition at the premises of the National Museum of Ukrainian History in the Second World War.
