President Petro Poroshenko intends to submit to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine a new draft law on the responsibility of officials for illicit enrichment. The Head of State told that during a meeting of the Regional Development Council of Zaporizhia region, speaking of the decision of the Constitutional Court to abolish the relevant article in the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

“I want to reassure everyone that as soon as the decision is made public, as soon as we get acquainted with it, I will immediately order to prepare the draft law on the punishment for officials for illicit enrichment, taking into account the conclusions of the Constitutional Court, and submit it to the Verkhovna Rada. Moreover, I will define it as urgent,” Petro Poroshenko said.

“The new edition of the article will be drawn up so that not a thing can be said against it,” the President stressed.

He noted that the decision of the Constitutional Court had not been published yet. “Yesterday we had information that there was a decision of the Constitutional Court to abolish the article of the Criminal Code for illicit enrichment. It is only expected, nobody has seen it yet, we do not even have a confirmation so far,” the Head of State said.

“But despite the lack of an official publication, it has already received a negative feedback in social networks. And I understand this negative reaction very well,” he said.

The President stressed that he usually did not comment on certain court decisions. “I want to emphasize that I have never commented on judicial decisions as President. First, it is a separate branch of power. Second, I do not want it to be perceived as a political pressure on the court. It didn’t and won’t happen,” the Head of State noted.

“But as President and as a statesman, I have the right to act. The court does its job, and I do my own,” Petro Poroshenko added, recalling his right of legislative initiative.

The President also stressed that he was one of the authors of anticorruption legislation. “The key laws adopted in recent years have been developed or signed by me. Anticorruption legislation is integral. And I am sure that it is impossible to pick out, you know, separate fragments of it. It can lead to destruction,” Petro Poroshenko warned.
