During the working trip to Zakarpattia region, President Petro Poroshenko talked to the staff of Uzhhorod airport, which today had the first airliner. “Today, a regular airline flight arrived for the first time in a few years. The first passengers arrived. I think that this day should become remarkable for Zakarpattia, for Uzhhorod and for the whole Ukraine,” the President said.

Petro Poroshenko said that Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan and Zakarpattia RSA Head Hennadiy Moskal should hold the corresponding work to increase the intensity of regular flights. The President also said that, on his instructions, the Minister of Defense held talks with his Slovak counterpart, since the security issues had to be resolved. This issue was also discussed at the level of Prime Ministers of Ukraine and Slovakia.

The Head of State said that his wife Maryna Poroshenko had visited Zakarpattia a few months ago and spent about 14 hours to reach the region.

He recalled that since Slovakia had entered the European Common Aviation Area it had been forbidden to give permission to use air space on its own. That is why regular flights to Uzhhorod were canceled.

“I believe that this is totally unacceptable,” Petro Poroshenko said and stressed the importance of doing everything possible to overcome these nearly 900 km separating Uzhhorod and Kyiv in a few hours.

“It is very important that the first flight took place. The first flight for those who go to Kyiv and Uzhhorod. The first flight for tourists, because Zakarpattia has a lot to offer tourists: picturesque landscapes, the famous Svaliava water, resorts, air, people,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.
