Investment banker and former Ukrainian Economy Minister Aivaras Abromavicius spoke to Hromadske following the release of final exit polls, which indicated Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s comfortable victory in the first round of the presidential elections. Abromavicius currently acts as Zelenskiy’s adviser and recently expressed a desire to join Zelenskiy’s team if the latter becomes president and reaches out to him.

In his interview Abromavicius called International Monetary Fund the reform anchor in Ukraine, but noted that whilst cooperation with the institution is important for macroeconomic stability at this stage, both parties would be glad to discontinue their relationship when things improve and Ukraine repays all the loans.

Former Minister also mentioned that he and former Finance Minister Oleksandr Danyliuk had some “serious backlash with Kolomoisky” during their tenure. Abromavicius appreciates that the tradition of big businesses being involved in Ukrainian politics is unfortunate, but suspected that the oligarch supported other candidates with his media resource too; in a similar way to how other tycoons, including the incumbent president, are engaged in politics. He added that Zelenskiy has set his sights on the parliamentary elections and would not jeopardize his chances by bringing in the “so-called Kolomoisky’s people”.

Poroshenko has been a poor president, but has had some success on the foreign policy front. Not on all fronts, [however], because the Nord Stream 2 [is still] being constructed. This is a failure of, among other things, his foreign policy initiatives.

Investment banker also firmly believes president Poroshenko has made some serious foreign policy mistakes over the past few weeks, citing Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko’s recent attack on the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, as well as the Constitutional Court ruling all illicit enrichment cases as unconstitutional. Because of this, foreign diplomats are allegedly losing patience with Poroshenko. It would be “refreshing to see a new face and start with a clean sheet.”

In response to the question about the responsibility he accepts by supporting Zelenskiy in the presidential campaign, Abromavicius said that he is trusted because of his work as the Economy Minister.

Since Zelenskiy attracts such advisers for this particular stage, there is every chance to believe that there will be more people like [Abromavicius and Danyliuk] in his team in the future.
