AKP campaign jingle broadcast from minaret in Turkey’s Ağrı province

Social media erupted when video footage of the event went viral.

AKP leader President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently declared a women’s march “enemies of the call to prayer,” accusing them of disrespecting it with whistles during the march.

According to video footage from the March 8, International Women’s Day, demonstrations, the accusation was false.

However, Erdoğan has begun to use this incident at election rallies, calling on people to “not let enemies of call to prayer win.”

Turkey will hold local elections on March 31.
