“Ukraine is a maritime state that has vital interests in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. It has the Naval Forces capable of defending these vital interests, positions of exceptional importance for the national security of our state,” President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko noted during a working trip to Odesa region.
“Recently, in full compliance with the schedule, the float-out ceremony of a new, regular, already seventh armored boat of the Naval Forces of Ukraine took place. In the near future, the Navy will get additional assault boats,” the Head of State said. He recalled that the United States Coast Guard had recently handed over to the Ukrainian Navy two ships that should come to Ukraine in 2019.
“The further prospect is the armament with anti-ship missiles, means of projecting force on the near and far maritime zones. And many more steps … We are going along the path of systemic changes. We provide effective cooperation with our NATO partners,” Petro Poroshenko said. According to him, a few days ago, NATO’s ships were in Odesa and Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak had a meeting with Ukraine’s partners.
“Ukraine has never had such an effective relationship with its NATO partners as it has now. This is the proof that we are going our way. And this way is the way of integration of our state into the structures of the EU and NATO. I emphasize that the changes that are currently taking place in the Armed Forces and the Navy, deep reformation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are clearly enshrined in the Constitution as a reform of the state aimed to meet the criteria for joining NATO,” the President emphasized.
“A strategy for the reform of the Navy until 2035 was developed and coordinated with our partners. This is a gradual build-up of naval capabilities for Ukraine. And we have already begun the implementation of the first stage – the establishment of control over the territorial waters and strengthening the borders of Ukraine,” he added.
“I want to say that the maritime border of Ukraine is under the reliable protection of the Navy,” the President summed up.
